AOT Technician II - Bridge Inspection

at State of Vermont in Barre, Vermont, United States

Job Description

Overview

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented technician to support our Bridge Inspection Team. This role will assist the team leader in both the planning and execution of a wide range of field inspections across the state. These inspections cover primary bridges and other highway assets located across Vermont's highway network.

This is a field-based role with a home base in Belin Dill building, regardless of your residence or inspection location. The Technician will support the team leader with essential documentation tasks including taking photographs, drafting sketches, completing reports, and ensuring accurate records of the assets' condition. In addition, the position will be responsible for helping maintain inspection equipment and the vehicle assigned to the team.

On-the-job training is a key part of this position, and the Technician will learn inspection techniques through hands-on mentorship from experienced team leaders. Based on skills and experience, the position may also have the opportunity to independently inspect ancillary highway assets.

This is an active, outdoor role that requires statewide travel. Field inspections are conducted in a variety of challenging environments and conditions, including:

  • Exposure to weather and traffic
  • Wading in streams and rivers
  • Working in dark, confined spaces
  • Climbing ladders and navigating uneven, slippery, or rocky terrain
  • Traversing steep slopes and remote areas

This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position with travel and fieldwork requirements. Occasional schedule adjustments may be needed depending on project timelines and weather conditions. Fieldwork is most intensive from April through November, with the remaining time typically spent in the office on inventory management, data entry, report verification, and other projects.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in an office, laboratory, and field setting for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials, traffic hazards, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Class incumbents may be required to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, traverse rough, wooded, and steep terrain, travel in boats or work on structures above ground level. Duties may also require exposure to extreme weather conditions. Out of state travel may be required.
