Job Description
OverviewThe Vermont Department of Health has an exciting opportunity to be a part of the environmental health team that helps protect public health in Vermont. The Compliance & Enforcement Advisor oversees compliance with regulatory requirements at a senior professional level and works on a wide range of complex environmental health enforcement issues, compliance assistance and improvement strategies, and rule writing. The role involves extensive interactions with Division of Environmental Health program managers and field staff, department legal counsel and communications specialists, landlords and business owners, local town officials and state agency partners.
The position works on food safety inspection and lodging sanitation violation enforcement, lead poisoning prevention and asbestos law compliance for landlords and contractors, radioactive materials and x-ray instrument inspection compliance, and licensing issues. The position prepares cases for progressive enforcement and referral to the Attorney General's Office. The position also provides technical support, including training and guidance documents to local town officials who manage public health hazards in their communities.
The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter who works well independently and as part of a team, and has excellent writing and communication skills, and legal, policy and/or regulatory experience.

Environmental FactorsDuties are performed largely in an office setting, with some required travel for which private means of transportation must be available. Evening and weekend duty may be necessary.
Stress may be encountered in dealing with a variety of industries and issues, as well as with conflicting opinions. Good human relations skills are needed to deal with sensitive enforcement issues that may evoke strong adversarial opinions which should be positively channeled.
