Are you looking for an opportunity to use your background in business and customer service to improve both local and state government? Do you want to assist Vermonters with work that impacts virtually every person in our state? The Vermont Department of Taxes seeks an organized customer friendly, individual to work in the office at our front window area assisting taxpayers within person questions, reviewing returns, taking phone calls and assisting taxpayers through email. This position will work closely with Vermont Department of Taxes staff, taxpayers, and many other state agencies and towns.


Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Providing support to taxpayers through both phone, emails and in person.
  • Reviewing returns for accuracy and correcting mistakes or requesting information.
  • Working collaboratively with other staff to ensure deadlines are met.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Extension tax knowledge
  • Experience in business or fiscal duties.
  • Knowledge of local government.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds.
  • A desire to continue to learn and grow.

 

This position will support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Candidates will have the right to withdraw their application before fingerprinting or a background check is conducted.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting. Workload pressure may vary over time. Incumbents must be able to concentrate on details and perform accurate work in the face of frequent interruptions. Human relations skills may be needed to deal with the general public. Stressful situations and strong differences of opinion with taxpayers or their representatives may occur. Some travel for work may be required. Pressure from work deadlines is predictable.
