Job Description

Overview

The Watershed Management Division seeks to recruit for an Assistant Division Director. The Division is comprised of approximately 100 full-time permanent water quality professionals, engineers, scientists, environmental analysts, and technicians all working on the holistic management of Vermont's surface water resources. The Division staff also grows seasonally with the support of dedicated temporary or seasonal staff that provide technical support to Division and program-specific initiatives and obligations.  

 

The Assistant Director position is responsible for management, administrative, planning and policy work involving the work of this large and busy division within the Department of Environmental Conservation. In collaboration with the Director, the position is responsible for leading and coordinating the overall work of the Division, ensuring the coordination and integration of all surface water programs. 

 

The job involves both proactive and reactive identification and resolution of issues - ranging from broad policy, programmatic analyses, and strategic planning to specific permitting coordination issues. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Division Director with considerable opportunity for independent action. 

 

The ideal candidate will have significant experience with the principles and practices of water resources management, knowledge of state and federal statutes, regulations, and policies related to water resource management in Vermont, and the proven ability to solve problems and make decisions.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in a standard office setting, but some field work may be necessary. Some work outside of regular duty hours can be expected. An incumbent may need to attend/chair a variety of public and private meetings, sometimes on short notice, and which may be held outside of the normal work schedule. Tight deadlines for reports and responses to federal or state legislative requests should be anticipated.
