All members of the VT Department of Corrections (DOC) Out of State Unit (OOSU) must be familiar with the details of monitoring long term offenders that are either housed in the Federal Bureau of Prisons or at facilities through the Interstate Compact System. In these cases, the receiving state assumes responsibility for the inmate, but their cases must continue to be monitored.  OOSU Corrections Services Specialists must be familiar with interpreting state and federal sentences, filing Vermont Detainers on the offenders with the receiving facility to protect Vermont Department of Corrections' interest and to ensure proper monitoring of these offenders. Corrections Services Specialists within the OOSU maintain the knowledge of security principles for each out of state correctional facility. Should an emergent situation arise, it is their responsibility to respond, as needed, to that facility to provide knowledge or assistance with interviews using trained techniques, counseling, casework, or placement assistance.
