Job Description

The Department of Buildings & General Services (BGS) is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic III to join our Operations & Management Division in the Springfield area.

This role will manage a variety of independent construction, maintenance, and repair projects involving buildings, grounds, and utilities. The position also serves as the primary contact for maintenance and custodial needs in an assigned area, ensuring facilities remain safe, functional, and well-maintained.

Responsibilities include:

• Performing hands-on structural maintenance and repair work.
• Estimating costs for new construction and recommending improvements.
• Preparing reports and managing assigned projects from start to finish.

Successful candidates will have strong technical skills and considerable experience with computers, email, internet, and maintenance-related software. 

This position has a schedule of Monday through Friday, 6:30am to 3pm. This position requires a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel between work sites. A criminal record check and/or child abuse registry check are required.

Duties are performed at state buildings including correctional facilities. Contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. Certain positions may require possession of a valid driver's license. May require emergency response to calls outside of regular working hours. Some potential for physical injury may be present.
