Job Description
OverviewThe AGO seeks to fill a Paralegal position in the Administrative Law Unit. The Administrative Law Unit (ALU) provides legal services to State Agencies and Departments, representing the State before the Vermont Labor Relations Board (VLRB), the Vermont Human Rights Commission (HRC), the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Vermont Board of Liquor and Lottery (BLL), and the Vermont Board of Medical Practice (BMP).
The position entails providing support to ALU attorneys, which includes:
- Drafting legal documents and pleadings;
- Preparing discovery requests and responses;
- Assembling exhibits, gathering information/evidence;
- Legal drafting correspondence;
- Liaison with state agencies and law firms;
- Assemble litigation exhibits and binders;
- Proofread and file legal documents with courts and tribunals;
- Assist with document and discovery collection and production: obtaining, organizing, bates stamping, and transferring documents and electronic media and otherwise
- review documents for privilege and confidentiality based on instruction from attorney and perform required redactions;
- Draft, proofread, and send correspondence;
- Conduct electronic searches of email and similar files;
- Assist with drafting and assembling AGO contract documents, and obtaining required insurances, and tax forms;
- Schedule meetings, interviews, and depositions, including teleconferences and video teleconferences;
- Calendar deadlines and events;
- Mail distribution;
- Phone/Front Desk coverage as needed to cover for primary employee;
- Case Management database: enter, update and close out matters such as litigation and contracts, run reports, and conduct conflict checks; and
- Update statute sets.
The position also provides paralegal and administrative support services to the Chief of the AGO’s General Counsel and Administrative Law Division and the Front Office, which includes serving on the AGO Campaign Finance Committee, assisting with Vermont Open Meeting Law complaint reviews, and completing other tasks as needed and as ALU workload allows.
The position is located at 109 State Street in Montpelier, Vermont. However, the position is currently hybrid, with in-office work required on certain days in accordance with AGO policies.
Environmental FactorsDuties are generally performed in office settings. Some work in the field could on rare occasions necessitate travel for which incumbents should have private means of transportation available. Some evening or overtime work may be required. Incumbents must be able to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and deal tactfully with the public.
