Job Description:


The primary function of this position is to perform janitorial, custodial, housekeeping and event support. Performs carpet extraction and refinishing of tile floors in classrooms, offices, lounges, bathrooms, common areas and any other assigned areas. May also be required to perform some grounds keeping or maintenance tasks as well as performing various manual tasks required for the routine maintenance of the buildings and grounds.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

+ Cleans campus property such as offices, classrooms, corridors, walls, floors, windows, furniture, restrooms, or fixtures by sweeping, washing, waxing, vacuuming, polishing, buffing, dusting and/or empties and cleans waste barrels, recycling bins, and other waste receptacles

+ Operates floor scrubbers, power washers, orbital buffers, or other similar mechanical or power-driven equipment

+ Performs floor care duties such as dry mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, and buffing floors

+ Performs carpet extraction and refinishing of tile floors in offices, classrooms, corridors, lounges, bathrooms, common areas and any other assigned areas

+ Drives vehicles and equipment

+ Sweeps sidewalks, courtyards and entryways

+ Performs manual labor in a stockroom, storeroom, and /or mechanical rooms

+ Completes daily event setups—Moves and sets up furniture, equipment, etc.

+ Assist with daily event management to include unlocking meeting rooms, checking out furniture and equipment, and maintaining awareness of daily event schedules

+ Shovel’s snow, sands roadways or walkways, and performs manual tasks involved with snow removal, control, and disposal

+ Makes general repairs of a simple nature, including minor repairs to equipment

+ May reset electrical circuits and perform other work not requiring a license or other certification

+ Performs routine manual tasks involved in the maintenance, repair, or beautification of campus

+ Performs routine labor tasks to assist skilled trades-people engaged in maintenance, repair, or construction work using hand and electrical tools appropriate to craft, such as assisting with dismantling, fabrication, alteration, and construction of building structures and building systems

+ May be required to plant, seed, transplant, prune, trim, water, spray, or fertilize trees, shrubbery, grass, plants, or flowers

+ Performs other manual labor tasks in connection with the maintenance and operation of a garage or equipment depot

+ Cleans, washes, refuels, oils, or greases trucks or automobiles

+ Reports and /or submits work requests of hazardous and unusual situations to the appropriate authority

+ Keeps simple records such as maintenance logs or inventory counts

+ Uses Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to generate work requests and to record maintenance practices

+ Performs other related duties

+ Essential personnel and must be able to respond to emergency situations

+ Occasional night time and weekends required

Preferred qualifications

+ Experience in custodial and snow removal services in a higher education setting

+ Knowledge of the standard procedures followed in the storage of building custodial and cleaning materials

+ Knowledge of the types and uses of materials, tools and equipment used in building custodial maintenance work

+ Knowledge of the proper care and maintenance of equipment used in building custodial maintenance work

+ Knowledge of industry standards, current technology, methods, and trends for efficient floor maintenance services

+ Demonstrated ability to schedule work appropriately, to keep high-traffic areas in good shape, by maintaining acceptable levels of quality, health, safety, and appearance

+ Utilization and implementing of the most current industry standards related to specific floor type care

+ Knowledge of the principles and methods of inventory control of supplies and equipment

+ Ability to accurately receive information and make sound decisions

+ Previous experience using specialized floor cleaning equipment (buffers and carpet care cleaners) preferred

+ Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in building maintenance, custodial, groundskeeping and storekeeping work

+ Experience handling, mixing, and using cleaning and disinfectant chemicals

+ Skill in the use of a variety of motorized equipment such as snow blowers, lawn mowers, forklifts, dollies, rototillers, etc.

+ Ability to maintain accurate records

+ Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders and work at particular heights

+ A demonstrated commitment to promoting domestic diversity issues and/or global multiculturalism


This position works indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time; lift and carry heavy objects. Work varied nights and weekends as needed. Exposed to hazard of wet, slippery floors; work under exposure to the hazards to chemicals, toxic and noxious fumes, dust, excessive heat and high noise levels. May work from ladders and scaffolds. May be required to drive and/or operate equipment. Frequently communicates with staff, students and community. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
