Job Description:


The Science Department Laboratory Safety Officer ensures Science (Biology and Physical Science) laboratory safety compliance including, but not limited to: complying with state and federal laboratory safety and waste disposal guidelines, inspections of laboratory safety compliance, safety training of science division personnel, maintaining and record keeping of all pertinent documents, and ensuring/arranging proper labeling and disposal of all hazardous wastes from the Science Department. In addition, the Laboratory Technician provides laboratory assistance and support to the Science Department and performs administrative and laboratory work. The Laboratory Technician is responsible for maintaining inventory of laboratory equipment, materials and supplies, ordering new/replacement materials, maintaining/caring for laboratory equipment and live animals, setting up laboratory experiments and related equipment/supplies for labs, and ensuring laboratory safety and proper disposal of all hazardous wastes. Performs related work as directed.


Greenfield Community College’s Science Department offers a variety of science courses that meet the general degree requirements for liberal arts students and supports the large cohort of students planning a career in STEM and Health Occupations. GCC awards Associate in Science Degrees in Allied Health, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Science of Earth and Environment, and Engineering Science, and offers concentrations of study for the Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts degree in Environmental Conservation, Farm and Food Systems, and Plant and Soil Science. To support these degree programs, we offer labs in general and organic chemistry, geology, plants and soils, biology, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, and others. There are currently five full time science faculty members, two full time staff members and many part time adjunct professors. The 112-acre GCC campus houses an Outdoor Learning Laboratory which includes botanical, organic, and permaculture gardens; a small vegetable and fruit production garden; college energy produced by solar array, geo-thermal wells, and solar thermal and pellet heating systems; 32 acres of deciduous forest with a trail network for research and recreational access; three natural wetlands and a small man-made pond; and a currently expanding campus farm. The Science Department maintains seven laboratories, actively seeks grant funding, participates in a regional study of salamanders (SPARnet), and offers diverse internship and student research opportunities. We are passionate about teaching and committed to providing a diverse, high quality curriculum to our students. We are seeking a colleague who shares these passions and who will contribute to the future direction of the science course offerings at Greenfield Community College.


+ Ensures compliance with current state and federal laboratory safety and waste disposal guidelines;

+ Maintains and updates laboratory safety documents;

+ Prepares and sets up laboratory exercises and related equipment/supplies for all labs;

+ Ensures proper care/maintenance of laboratory equipment and live organisms;

+ Operates various laboratory equipment and tools and general office equipment;

+ Performs administrative tasks associated with department activities;

+ Conducts laboratory safety training with science division personnel;

+ Manges inventory of laboratory equipment and materials including ordering and receiving of new materials;

+ Participates in science department and division meetings;

+ Supervises work study students;

+ Performs related work as assigned.


+ Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or closely related field;

+ One-year experience or training involving laboratory functions and safety compliance;

+ Familiarity with science laboratory equipment;

+ Ability to attend required safety training courses;

+ Ability to multi-task.


+ Requires the ability to perceive and discriminate colors and odor.


+ Two years experience in an academic setting working with students, faculty and institutional staff;

+ One-year experience working as a laboratory technician in a college setting;

+ One-year experience supervising work study students;

+ Experience in budgeting;

+ Experience and/or knowledge in the biotechnology field;

+ Experience working in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory setting;

+ Experience following general biology, microbiology, and chemistry lab protocols;

+ Three (3) years’ experience and/or training involving laboratory functions and safety compliance.

SALARY: Grade 4. Salary range is $52,754 – $76,831, the appointment salary is based on one’s education and experience as dictated by the collective bargaining agreement classification compensation structure. Candidates are therefore advised that it is unlikely the offered salary will be at or near the top of the range.
