Job Description

Assists the Laboratory Supervisor in achieving efficient Laboratory operation by performing clinical tests. Supports laboratory testing services by performing specimen collection and processing, quality control and maintenance functions, and results reporting and verification. Participates in training and in-service programs to maintain and upgrade competency at the level required by the Supervisor as procedures are changed or added.

+ With regard to the tasks listed below, the employee demonstrates proficiency and competence, performs clinical and proficiency tests under the direct supervision of a NYSDOH qualified Technologist, Supervisor or Director, performs quality control procedures as required, evaluates QC results before proceeding with clinical testing, records all QC results and takes necessary corrective action.

+ CH1 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the chemistry analyzers.

+ CH1 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the chemistry analyzers.

+ CH3 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the hematology automated cell counters.

+ CH4 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the coagulation analyzers.

+ CH5 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the blood gas analyzers.

+ CH6 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the diagnostic hepatitis instrumentation.

+ CH7 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the electrophoresis instrumentation.

+ CH8 Demonstrates proficiency in performing manual cell counting procedures.

+ CH9 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the rate nephelometer.

+ CH10 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the glycosylated hemoglobin analyzer.

+ CH11 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the infectious disease testing equipment.

+ CH12 Demonstrates proficiency in performing LAP fixation, staining and interpretation.

+ CH13 Demonstrates proficiency in performing donor testing procedures.

+ CH14 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the osmometer.

+ CH15 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the lead analyzer.

+ CH16 Demonstrates proficiency in preparing and performing peripheral smear differentials.

+ CH17 Demonstrates proficiency in preparing and reporting erythrocyte sedimentation rates.

+ CH18 Demonstrates proficiency in performing d-dimer testing.

+ CH19 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the automated urine dipstick reader.

+ CH20 Demonstrates proficiency in performing microscopic examinations of urinary sediment.

+ Demonstrates proficiency in performing manual testing procedures in urinalysis (fecal fat, occult blood, fecal leukocytes, etc).

+ CH26 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the airfuge and body fluid centrifuge.

+ GEN12 Demonstrates proficiency in performing BAT testing.

+ GEN16 Acts as a resource for the MLT staff in resolving technical, quality control and instrumentation problems.

2. Performs all assigned routine scheduled equipment maintenance.

+ CH24 Demonstrates proficiency in performing maintenance on the chemistry water system.

+ GEN1 Completes all assigned routine scheduled maintenance

+ GEN2 Performs daily temperature checks and records information.

+ GEN3 Follows troubleshooting procedures when equipment malfunctions.

+ GEN10 Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing the analytic balance

3. Collection of patient specimens.

+ CH22 Demonstrates proficiency in assisting with bone marrow collections

+ GEN4 Demonstrates proficiency in all phlebotomy procedures.

4. Performs proficiency testing.

+ GEN7 Performs satisfactorily on proficiency testing.

+ GEN8 Completes follow up as needed on incorrect proficiency test results.

+ GEN9 Completes all pre- and post-analytical steps in proficiency testing.

5. Participates in Quality Assurance.

+ CH23 Demonstrates proficiency in reviewing the daily Quality Assurance log and making necessary corrections as needed.

+ CH25 Demonstrates proficiency in preparing slides and reports for pathology review.

+ GEN11 Knows the NYSDOH infectious disease reporting requirements

6. Participates in training activities.

+ GEN6 Demonstrates the ability to train students and new employees as assigned.

7. Miscellaneous

+ GEN5 Is responsible for maintaining assigned inventory.

+ GEN15 Other duties as assigned.

+ Licensed or eligible (application pending with a limited license in effect) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York.

+ Employees with a limited license must obtain full license within New York State guidelines.

+ Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology (hospital-based formal internship required) OR

+ Bachelor’s Degree in related science from an accredited college with subsequent relevant clinical laboratory experience for one year. Degree must include sufficient science and math credits to meet minimum NYSDOH requirements for a Technologist.

+ ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification is highly recommended.

+ Graduate of an accredited MLT Program, who also meets requirement #4 above, the last year of which includes clinical training and a clinical internship, constitutes 6 months of relevant experience. A person hired with these qualifications would be required to be under the supervision of anther MT or a supervisor for the first 6 months of employment.

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
